Top 5 Mother Figures in Fiction

In honor of Mother’s Day this weekend, this week’s Top 5 Wednesday topic is all about our favorite fictional moms/mother figures.

1. Cass from A Cold Season by Alison Littlewood

A Cold Season is a horror novel so naturally Cass’ son, Ben, gets possessed by the Devil. She’s pretty fierce, going to great lengths to protect Ben from the personification of Evil himself. (Note: the ending of this book is chilling.)

2. Margaret White from Carrie by Stephen King

Margaret White definitely represents the dark side of motherhood – she’s abusive, controlling, and all-around batshit crazy. I absolutely would not want her as a mom – but she is a fascinating character, nonetheless.

3. Mama Thames from the Peter Grant series by Ben Aaronovitch

Not only is she a mom who keeps a sharp eye on her (many) daughters, she’s the goddess of the river Thames and able to have people genuflecting before her simply by glancing at them.

4. Ruth from the Chief Inspector Armand Gamache series by Louise Penny

Ruth is a crochety, cranky old woman who doesn’t actually have any children of her own – but the people that inhabit the small village of Three Pines may as well be. She’s nasty, sarcastic, cynical and sometimes says the most atrocious things – but it’s in her actions that we see her nurturing side come out. Just thinking of how she went soft over some baby ducklings makes me tear up.

5. Mother Abigail from The Stand by Stephen King

The ultimate mother figure, Mother Abigail is kind, warm, and a hell of a baker. But she’s also dedicated to her righteous cause and there are moments when she can be quite harsh when she has to convince someone to do the right thing.
